According to The American Heritage Dictionary there is no difference between them, either in their spelling or meaning. WordReference.com, however, says that fulfill is more commonly used in the US, while fulfil is chiefly British.

Quoting Prime Minister Tony Blair “The Plain English Campaign has played a major role in improving the way public bodies communicate with citizens. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement – not least from politicians – so the campaign’s work is far from over.”

If we translators receive clearer texts, we will no longer have a hard time figuring out misleading texts, which usually and painstakingly lead us to produce inaccurate translations.

I’ve always cited Ghoti to support the need of a reform, but that has become a piece of cake since I came across ghoughpteighbteau and saw Ed Rondthaler’s bright video called The English Language is Dum, which you must see for yourself.

The two Latin abbreviations in bold in the preceding paragraph are not an exception. They appear in almost all legal documents. Both are originated from Latin, but have different meanings, and must NOT be confused. While e.g. means “for example” (from the Latin expression exempli gratia), the abbreviation i.e. means “that is” (from the Latin expression id est).

• The abbreviation “e.g.” must be used to list a few examples of one thing mentioned: I have the documents, e.g., powers of attorney, affidavits, and assignments, that you requested . A list started with e.g. should not be ended with etc.
• The abbreviation “i.e.” must be used to give a more precise description of one thing mentioned: The hearing, i.e., the preliminary hearing, is set for tomorrow afternoon.

Use two periods to punctuate e.g. and i.e. in U.S. English. In British English, however, they may be unpunctuated. Punctuated or unpunctuated, they must be surrounded with commas.

Their translations into Portuguese are “por exemplo,” and “, ou seja,”, accordingly.

An English native speaker, with a reasonable command of Portuguese, never hesitated to say “absolutely!” whenever he wanted to emphatically express complete agreement with something.

During a visit to Brazil, he loved it here, and decided to stay. Translation was his first attempt to make a living, but little did he know that it would take more than a reasonable command of Portuguese. Relying on his Portuguese speaking skills, he ventured to go for a job interview, in Portuguese, with a renowned, quality-demanding translator, whose first question was:

- “Você domina o português?”; without hesitation, he answered:

- “Absolutamente!”

Poor him! That was the first and last question. The interviewing translator kindly responded :

- “I’m not giving you this job, and I’ll tell you why. Unlike the English “absolutely”, “absolutamente” has a negative meaning. You just told me - and proved – that you do not command Portuguese.

If he had gone to Portugal, however, he might have taken the job. Portuguese spoken in Portugal accepts “absolutamente” in an affirmative context.

This taught him a lesson, and should teach us all. When translating “absolutely” into Brazilian Portuguese, use “claro que sim!”, “com certeza!”, “certamente!” or any other word that expresses what it really means. See definition of “absolutely” at Dictionary.com.

There is a number of manners one can be verbose in writing. One of which, particularly for translators translating from Portuguese into English, is to use a particular word an excessive number of times in a sentence.

What word are we talking about? Anyone?

To illustrate verbosity, “excessively” could have been used above instead of “an excessive number of times”. Why use five (5) words when one will suffice?

Há casos em que ao traduzirmos palavras homófonas como, por exemplo, Heroine e Heroin, o resultado é polissêmico: heroína.

Heroine é a heroína das revistas em quadrinhos, aquela mulher que realizou algum grande feito, corajosa, destemida, enquanto Heroin, também heroína em português, é o composto derivado da morfina, entorpecente não legalizado que leva a alucinações.

O que se pode concluir é que, novamente, a visão de mundo, cultura e conhecimento amplo do que está escrevendo, falando, traduzindo são primordiais.

A banda Camisa de Vênus, sucesso nos anos 80, brincou com a polissemia da palavra heroína na letra da música “Eu não matei Joana D’Arc”. Vejam a letra e concluam se a Joana D’Arc a que a banda se refere é heroine ou heroin.

“Eu nunca tive nada com Joana D`Arc
Nós só nos encontramos pra passear no parque
Ela me falou dos seus dias de glória
E do que não está escrito lá nos livros de história
Que ficava excitada quando pegava na lança
E do beijo que deu na rainha da França
Agora todos pensam que fui eu que a cremei
Mas eu não sou piromaníaco, eu juro que não sei

Ontem eu nem a vi, sei que eu não tenho álibi
Mas eu, eu não matei Joana D`Arc

Eu nunca tive nada, nada, nada, nada com Joana D`Arc

Ela me falou que andava ouvindo vozes
